The girl Apple and Corn

Apple and Corn

In the world of LINE, she was known as Apple—a name as sweet and bright as the fruit itself. Whenever her friends saw her cheerful icon light up their screens, they knew a smile wasn’t far behind. But in her workplace, things were different. There, she was known as Corn, a name chosen more out of practicality than anything else. It was simple, sturdy, and unassuming, just like the woman herself when she clocked in for another day of work.

Apple—no, Corn—wasn’t one to draw much attention at the office. She kept to herself, quietly finishing her tasks in the back of the small Thai restaurant where she worked. The coworkers who knew her by Corn only saw the surface: a hard-working woman who moved through life with quiet determination. They didn’t see the rich world she carried within her.

Behind her calm demeanor, Apple was a single mother, navigating the challenges of life one careful step at a time. Her story started in Thailand, where she was born and raised. The bustling markets, the vibrant colors of temples, and the scent of street food sizzling in the air were the backdrop of her childhood. But life had taken unexpected turns. She moved to a new country, seeking better opportunities for her child and herself, determined to make it work despite the odds.

On the outside, Apple’s life was all about balance—balancing her job with the demands of motherhood, balancing her Thai roots with the culture of the country she now called home, and balancing the cheerful persona of "Apple" online with the resilience of "Corn" in her day-to-day reality.

Her son, the apple of her eye, was her motivation. Every morning before work, she’d get him ready for school, making sure his uniform was neat, his lunch packed, and his spirits high. And every night, she’d check on him after he had fallen asleep, his peaceful face reminding her why she pushed through every long day. Apple dreamed of a future where he could grow up with the opportunities she never had.

But there were moments when Apple longed to escape into the identity she carried in her phone. As "Apple," she felt light and free, connecting with friends from back home, laughing over video calls, and sharing stories of life’s little joys. It was her way of staying connected to the person she once was before life’s responsibilities piled up.

Despite the weight on her shoulders, Apple never let it break her. She found joy in the small things—an unexpected joke from her son, a kind word from a stranger, the smell of freshly cooked rice wafting through the kitchen. And slowly, as the days went by, she began to realize that maybe "Corn" wasn’t just a name she used for convenience. Corn was resilient, steady, and capable of weathering tough conditions. Corn was dependable, just like her.

In time, Apple came to appreciate both sides of herself. There was Apple, the lighthearted dreamer who believed in a better tomorrow, and there was Corn, the steadfast mother who made sure that tomorrow was possible.

And so, she lived in the space between her two names—Apple in her heart, Corn in her actions—quietly building a life for herself and her son, one day at a time.

This short story blends her two identities and reflects on her inner strength, all while highlighting her unique journey as a single mother balancing work, motherhood, and her own personal aspirations.
